Kottar is a located in Nagercoil, Kanayakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India near the southernmost tip of Peninsular India.
The great Roman Catholic missionary, St. Francis Xavier, is said to have had Kottar as his base, while doing his missionary work in the coastal areas of the southernmost part of India. The small shrine inside the present Cathedral was built by him while he stayed in Kottar during his missionary journey in India.
The church where he celebrated mass is a Cathedral under the Roman Catholic Diocese.

Pope Benedict XVI has transferred Kumbakonam Bishop Peter Remigius and appointed him as the Bishop of Kottar Diocese in Tamil Nadu. The See of Kottar was vacant due to passing away of Bishop Leon Tharmaraj on Jan. 16, 2007.
The Ecclesiastical provision was made public at 12.00 Noon in Rome, corresponding to 15.30 IST, June 30, 2007.
Bishop Peter Remigius has been the Bishop of Kumbakonam for 17 years.
Earlier, he has been the executive director of Caritas India. Presently, among many positions, he is also the Chairman of Caritas India, one of the largest Non Governmental Organisations of the country.
